Spring Hatch/Multi State/Bovine Abortion Funds Call

Funding Overview:

The basic objective of the CFAH grant program is to provide seed funds to support new and innovative research, and assist faculty in developing preliminary data required to apply for extramural funding in the area of food animal health.

Funding Restrictions

Please note: There is a limit of two proposal submissions per faculty member as principal investigator, excluding the Edward E. Hills Humane Treatment Call. The same project cannot be submitted to multiple fund sources. The purpose of this is to help distribute the limited amount of CFAH funding dollars available to as many PIs as possible.

The calls open for funding for Spring 2024-2025 include:

Hatch
Multi-state and Multi-state Travel*
Bovine Abortion
Marcia Rivas (note: last year of funding)
Edward E. Hills Humane Treatment

Eligibility, Proposal Requirements and Budget Restrictions

To view eligibility, proposal requirements, and budget restrictions for each specific call, please view the information on this table.

*MULTI-STATE TRAVEL FUNDS

PIs who are registered participants of Multi-State Research projects may annually request up to $1,500 in travel funds to attend Multi-State Research meetings and/or workshops. These funds are current year funds and can be spent once awarded (Spring 2024) through June 30, 2025.

Requests for travel funds should NOT be included in the annual request for project funding, and should be submitted in a separate letter, addressed to Leslie Nemeth no later than April 30, 2024 by 11:59PM PST. The letter should include the NIMSS Project Number, anticipated date and location of the meeting. Priority will be given to PIs who hold leadership positions associated with a specific multi-state project. If you hold such a position associated with the project meeting you wish to attend, please include that information in your letter.

CFAH Fund Allocation and Project Notice Policy

2024-2025 Project Period Dates: Oct. 1, 2024 - June 30, 2026

CFAH receives the Preliminary Allocation Notification from USDA/NIFA for federal funds (i.e., Hatch, Multi-State, Animal Health) between November and May after the start of the project period. For example, for the 2024-2025 Hatch/Multi State (Spring) and Animal Health (Fall) calls, we expect to receive the preliminary notification between November 2024 and May 2025 from USDA/NIFA. It is the policy of CFAH to allocate 75% of the preliminary funding amount when the preliminary notice is received.

Projects funded by endowments or state funds (Bovine Abortion, Dairy Herd Health & Food Safety, Edward E. Hills Fund for Educational Outreach for the Human Treatment of Food Animals, Lillian Young Bovine Research Funds, and Marcia Rivas Memorial Funds) will follow the same timing of release of funds to coincide with preliminary notification of funding for the federal funding sources.

The Final Notification is usually received in November of the same fiscal year funds are required to be spent.  For example, for the 2024-2025 Spring Call, we expect to receive the final funding notification in November 2025, and if funding is not reduced from the preliminary amount, the remaining 25% will be allocated to the next highest ranking proposal(s). If you are able to work around this restriction, we encourage you to apply.

All CFAH projects must have current progress and final reports in REEport or NRS before new funds can be allocated to the PI.
