Fall Animal Health Formula Funds and DHHFS Call

Due September 27, 2023 by 11:59pm PST

Funding Overview

The basic objective of the CFAH grant program is to provide seed funds to support new and innovative research, and assist faculty in developing preliminary data required to apply for extramural funding in the area of food animal health.

Funding Restrictions

Please note: There is a limit of two proposal submissions per faculty member as principal investigator. The same project cannot be submitted to multiple fund sources. The purpose of this is to help distribute the limited amount of CFAH funding dollars available to as many PIs as possible.

Eligibility, Proposal Requirements and Budget Restrictions

To view eligibility, proposal requirements, and budget restrictions for each specific call, please view the information on this table.

CFAH Fund Allocation and Project Notice Policy

CFAH receives the Preliminary Allocation Notification from USDA/NIFA for federal funds (ie, Hatch, Multi-State, Formula (Animal Health)) between November and May of the same fiscal year funds are required to be spent.  For example, for the 2022-2023 Hatch/Multi State and Formula Fund calls, we expect to receive the preliminary notification between November 2022 and May 2023 from USDA/NIFA. It is the policy of CFAH to allocate 75% of the preliminary funding amount when the preliminary notice is received.

Projects funded by endowments or state funds (Bovine Abortion, Dairy Herd Health & Food Safety, Edward E. Hills Fund for Educational Outreach for the Human Treatment of Food Animals, Lillian Young Bovine Research Funds, and Marcia Rivas Memorial Funds) will follow the same timing.

The Final Notification is usually received in May of the same fiscal year funds are required to be spent.  For example, for the 2022-2023 Spring Call, we expect to receive the final funding notification in May 2023, and if funding is not reduced from the preliminary amount, the remaining 25% will be allocated to the next highest ranking proposal(s). If you are able to work around this restriction, we encourage you to apply.

All CFAH projects must have current progress reports in REEport/NIFA Reporting System (NRS) before new funds can be allocated to the PI.
